There was a time when honoring people was taught very well to our kids. It wasn’t a flippant reminder as disrespect was demonstrated, but rather a focused and sincere concern and lesson that was taught if we failed to respect an older man or woman: the father of a friend was called by his first name, or the mother of a friend wasn’t addressed with a Mrs. in front of her name.
Today’s culture is different from what it was 30 years ago. It’s changed, but the Bible hasn’t. We are commanded to show respect to our elders as fathers and mothers, and the younger people as brothers and sisters, “in all purity”. We don’t have the right to give anyone a “piece of our mind” when we feel like it, but instead we need to hold our tongue and speak in an honorable and respectful manner.
Let’s remember what our Father in Heaven tells us we need to be – honoring towards others because they were made in the image of God.
“Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.” – 1 Timothy 5:1
